7 Warning Signs Your Lorry Tyres Need Immediate Replacement

Don't wait for a blowout to act. Learn the seven critical warning signs that HGV drivers and fleet managers should never ignore when it comes to tyre condition.

1. Tread Depth Below 3mm

While the UK legal minimum for HGV tyres is 1mm, waiting until you reach the legal limit before replacing tyres is a false economy. At 3mm, wet braking distances on a laden 44-tonne artic can increase by up to 40% compared to a new tyre with 8mm of tread. Fit tyres with tread depth indicators — small bars moulded into the grooves at the legal minimum depth — but treat these as absolute last resort indicators, not replacement targets.

2. Visible Sidewall Damage or Bulging

A bulge or lump in the sidewall of an HGV tyre is a tyre emergency waiting to happen. It indicates that the internal structure of the tyre — the plies and belts — has been compromised, often due to kerbing, pothole impact, or overloading. Under the load and heat of motorway driving, a bulged sidewall can fail catastrophically with no further warning. Any tyre showing sidewall bulging must be removed from service immediately and replaced before the vehicle moves.

3. Cracking or Weather Checking

Tyres that have aged or been stored in poor conditions develop fine cracks across the sidewall and tread area — a phenomenon known as weather checking or ozone cracking. While fine surface cracks may not indicate immediate danger, deep cracking that extends into the tyre body is a serious defect. HGVs that operate in extreme temperature ranges or that sit unused for extended periods are particularly prone to this form of degradation.

4. Uneven Tread Wear Patterns

Healthy tyres wear evenly across the full tread width. Centre-only wear indicates chronic over-inflation. Edge wear on both sides suggests under-inflation. Wear on a single edge points to a wheel alignment problem. Cupping or scalloping across the tread surface suggests suspension or shock absorber issues. Any uneven wear pattern is a symptom of an underlying problem that will rapidly destroy the replacement tyre if not addressed alongside the tyre change.

5. Vibration or Pulling at Highway Speed

Persistent vibration through the steering wheel or a consistent pull to one side at highway speed can indicate tyre issues including internal belt separation, flat spots from locked-wheel braking, or significant imbalance. These symptoms should trigger immediate tyre inspection — never assume vibration will resolve itself. Internal tyre damage is invisible from the outside but can lead to sudden tyre failure at the worst possible moment.

6. Object Embedded in the Tyre

Screws, nails, shards of metal and road debris regularly become embedded in commercial vehicle tyres. If an embedded object is found, do not remove it roadside — the object may be acting as a temporary plug preventing complete pressure loss. Call a mobile HGV tyre fitter immediately to assess whether the tyre can be safely repaired (punctures in the central tread area under 6mm diameter) or requires replacement. Never continue a journey on a tyre with an embedded object.

7. Age Over 7 Years

Even tyres with adequate tread depth degrade chemically over time. Most tyre manufacturers and the British Tyre Manufacturers' Association (BTMA) recommend that commercial vehicle tyres over 7 years old should be removed from service regardless of outward appearance. The manufacture date is moulded into the sidewall as a four-digit DOT code — the first two digits indicate the week and the last two the year of manufacture. Check the age of all tyres in your fleet regularly.
