Responsible HGV Tyre Disposal: UK Environmental Requirements

With millions of commercial vehicle tyres reaching end-of-life in the UK each year, responsible disposal is both a legal obligation and environmental duty.

UK Regulations on Tyre Waste

In the UK, used tyres are classified as controlled waste under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Waste Framework Regulations 2011. This means that their disposal is legally regulated and cannot simply involve discarding tyres at landfill or fly-tipping (both of which carry significant penalties). Operators have a legal duty of care to ensure that all waste tyres arising from their vehicles are transferred to a registered waste carrier and disposed of at a licensed facility. Failure to do so can result in substantial fines and reputational damage.

How Our Service Handles Waste Tyre Collection

When our mobile tyre technicians replace tyres at a roadside or fleet depot, we take the replaced tyres with us for proper disposal as part of our standard service. We operate as a registered waste carrier and can provide Waste Transfer Notes (WTNs) on request for all waste tyres removed — essential documentation for fleet operators who need to demonstrate their duty of care compliance. We retain records of all waste tyre transfers for a minimum of two years in compliance with regulatory requirements.

What Happens to End-of-Life Commercial Tyres?

The UK has a well-developed tyre recycling infrastructure. End-of-life commercial tyres are primarily processed through pyrolysis (thermal decomposition that recovers carbon black, steel, and oils), granulation (creating crumb rubber used in playground surfaces, road construction, and sports turf), and energy recovery (using tyres as a fuel source in cement kilns and waste-to-energy facilities). The UK Tyre Recovery Association (UKTRA) coordinates much of this infrastructure, and the UK has consistently met or exceeded EU tyre recycling targets.

Casing Recovery for Retreading

Not all tyres reaching end-of-first-life need to be recycled. High-quality tyre casings can be retreaded — new tread applied to a sound, inspected casing — providing another full service life from the same casing. This significantly reduces the environmental impact of tyre use by extending the useful life of the casing and requiring only a fraction of the raw materials of a new tyre. Our technicians assess casings at time of removal and identify those suitable for retreading, diverting them from the waste stream where possible.
